With a variety of colors and textures, you can create a piece of art that will be one-of-a-kind and totally unique. So get ready to break out your crochet hooks and get creative with your scrap yarn!

For my scrap yarn crochet blanket I've used leftover yarn and scrap yarn - is there even a difference between the two?

Yes, there is a difference between leftover yarn and yarn scraps! Leftover yarn is usually the full length of the original skein, whereas yarn scraps are usually short pieces of yarn that are leftover from other projects. However, both leftover yarn and yarn scraps can be used to make a beautiful crochet blanket! If you are using yarn scraps, you will want to make sure that you join the pieces together securely before continuing with the pattern. You can also use the scraps to add interesting colors and textures to your blanket.

This blanket was incredibly fun to make and I loved seeing the different colors emerge.

Scrap Yarn Blanket

Crochet Pattern

Size

This will vary depending on the amount of yarn you use but in my case I had enough yarn to make a lap blanket approx. 34” x 42” (60 rows)

Materials

  • Worsted weight (4) yarn

  • 6.00mm crochet hook

  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends

Abbreviations (US terms)

sts - stitches

ch - chain

sc - single crochet

dc - double crochet

sk - skip

tch - turning chain

Notes

I strongly recommend joining all your yarn leftovers and scraps together first and winding them into balls or cakes before you start. This way you don’t have to join as you work and struggle to decide which color to choose next - trust me, that’s what I did in the beginning and didn’t work on the blanket for months because I couldn’t decide on which color to use next.

This pattern uses the crosshatch stitch where the double crochet stitches are worked into the 3-chain segments created in each row. If you’ve made C2C crochet projects you’ll find that this is a very similar stitch.

Pattern

  1. ch 203, sk 2 ch (counts as dc), 2 dc in next ch, *sk 3 ch, sc in next ch, ch 3, dc in next 3 ch, rep from * to last 4 ch, sk 3 ch, sc in last ch, turn

  2. ch 3 (counts as dc), 2 dc in first sc, *sk 3 dc, sc in first ch of ch 3, ch 3, dc in next 2 ch, dc in next sc, rep from * ending with sk 2 dc, sc in top tch, turn

Repeat Row 2 until you reach your desired size or you run out of yarn like I did 😅
