Anime North. Little Sister Sue tells me it’s the most awesome anime convention in North America and she’s super stoked about it. She’s so excited she gave me the idea to make Sailor Moon’s Crystal Star transformation item. And I, being a Sailor Moon fan (even bigger fan when I was in high school) didn’t waste a single moment and soon after I had created this quick and easy pin:
“Moon Crystal Power!”
First, I crocheted a flat circle and then added surface stitches (or slip stitches) for the star and border. I used a size 3.75mm crochet hook and acrylic yarn (Lion Brand – Vanna’s Choice in Pink and Phentex – Sol).
Stitches used:
ch: chain
hdc: half double crochet
sl st: slip stitch
inc: increase (2 sts in same st)
Round 1: With pink yarn, start by making 12 hdc in magic ring and then pull tight to close. Sl st to first st.
Alternative you can ch 4, sl st to first ch to form a circle then ch 2 (counts as first hdc) and make 11 hdc in ring (12 hdc).
Round 2: Ch 2, hdc in same st, inc in each st around, sl st to top starting ch (24 hdc).
Round 3: ch 2 and hdc in same st then [hdc, inc] around, sl st to top of starting ch (36 hdc):
Round 4: ch 2 and hdc in same st then [hdc in next 2 sts, inc] around, sl st to top of starting ch (48 hdc):
Fasten off and weave ends.
With yellow yarn, insert hook from front to back in between any hdc, yarn over and pull a loop through to front, insert hook into the next hdc space, yarn over again and this time pull loop through both loops on hook. Continue around:
For the star, I cut out the shape on a scrap piece of paper, pinned it to the circle and slip stitched around it (slip stitch same as the border):
Then I glued felt pieces – I’m not the best at cutting felt but you can probably guess those coloured oblong shapes are supposed to be the crystals representing the other Sailor Scouts and the moon in the centre.
Finally, I cut out a circle of roughly the same shape and size as the crochet circle, sewed a safety pin to it and then glued it to the back of the crochet circle.
And there you have Sailor Moon’s Crystal Star. This same project could work for another hero, a certain Winter Soldier 😉

So incredibly cute! I love that you used a paper star as a template. Why have I never thought of that?! I usually wing it… and end up with a headache. Now I know a better way. Thanks!
I usually wing it too and also end up with a headache. I think the Idea Gods were smiling down on me that day 😛
Thanks for sharing. I’ve linked you in my blog for crochet items related to Sailormoon.
