How to Crochet a Basic Granny Square

Today's post is not only a how-to but also a bit of a preview for something I've been working on for the past several weeks. The project I'm crocheting will be my largest piece this year! But first, I want to show you how to crochet a basic granny square and because it's almost Valentine's Day I went with a pink theme. Plus don't the stitches in the middle round almost look like hearts?

Yarn and hook size are not important for this tutorial, you can use whatever you have on hand to practice but of course, make sure you're using the right hook for the right yarn!

This granny square is made using double crochet stitches and joining with a slip stitch at the end of each round.

First, make 12 dc in magic ring. I did this by creating a magic ring then chained 3 and made 11 additional dc, then slip stitched to the top of the beginning chain.

Second, in any stitch make *[3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] all in the same stitch, skip 2 sts, *repeat 3 more times, sl st to first st.

Third, in any ch-2 space make *[3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc] all in the same space, ch 1, in the space between corners make 3 dc, ch 1, *repeat 3 more times, sl st to first st and fasten off.
